Our Foundations

A shed is only as solid as what it sits on. Because we build on-site, we can match the base to your yard instead of setting a factory shed on whatever happens to be level. Choose the foundation that fits your site, then put our included 2×6 joists with Advantech flooring — or the 2×8 tongue-and-groove upgrade — on top of it. Most Rhode Island yards are best served by the Premium Stone Base.

UPGRADE TO THE STRONGEST FLOOR IN THE INDUSTRY

2×8 Tongue and Groove Pressure Treated Flooring

This flooring is the strongest in the industry and can handle loads of about 1000 psi which can handle small vehicles.   When installed upon the 4×4 skids and the premium stone base, it will last multiple decades.

GOOD

Solid Concrete Blocks

Included in the base price when the site falls 12 inches or less across the shed. Your shed sits on solid concrete blocks under 2×6 joists spaced 16 inches on center — sturdier than the thin floors common on many lot-built sheds. Blocks can settle over time as they work into the soil. Not to worry: call us and we will come out and relevel the shed free of charge.

BETTER

Economy Stone Base

A compacted gravel pad under the shed that drains water instead of holding it against the floor. It is the step up from blocks when you want a continuous stone bed without the timber frame or weed fabric of our premium pad. A smart middle option on a tighter budget or a well-drained site.

BEST

Premium Stone Base

The foundation we recommend for most sheds. A 4×6 timber perimeter sized to the building, a fabric weed barrier, and plate-compacted stone that stays put, so the floor stays level and you are not calling us back to restack blocks. Pair it with the included Advantech floor or the 2×8 tongue-and-groove upgrade.

BETTER THAN BEST

Concrete Slab

A poured concrete slab is the strongest, most permanent foundation for a Rhode Island shed. It will not sink like blocks and does not depend on compacted stone to stay level, so it is the right choice for workshops, heavy equipment, or a building you want to treat as a long-term addition to the property. We can build on an existing slab, or put you in touch with a local concrete contractor to pour a new one sized to your shed.

PRESSURE TREATED POSTS

When the only option is a hillside, we can install treated posts. In some cases, the posts are set in a protective sleeve for frost protection. If the town or the grade requires concrete piers under the posts, we will quote that work or refer a concrete contractor.

CONCRETE PIERS

On larger sheds, some towns in Rhode Island require concrete piers that extend below the frost line (at least 40 inches). Piers can also be a good option in areas with heavy water runoff. We can refer you to a concrete contractor for the pour and then build your shed on the completed piers.
